The Maldives
dwellers had left Buddhism in just 2 months, the whole country became Muslim!
But how?
Here’s the story ……
The Maldives is
a tourist country located in the Indian Ocean, the country consists of 1192
small islands, of which only 200 islands are inhabited. 100% of the population
of the Maldives is Muslim, and it is necessary to be a Muslim to get
citizenship.
The strange
thing is that the Maldives was a country of Buddhists. Within just 2 months,
the king, and the people of this country all entered the realm of Islam.
But when and
how did this miracle happen?
This incident
was written by the famous traveler Ibn Battuta in his book after his tour of
the Maldives. Ibn Battuta also worked as a judge in the Maldives for a long
time.
He writes in
his book 'Tahfah al-Nazar fi Gharib al-Amsar wa Ajaib al-Amsar' that the people
of Maldives were Buddhists and superstitious too, because of this superstition,
a monster (Jin) was imposed on them, that monster appeared from the sea in the
glow of lights and candles on the last day of every month and People used to
decorate a girl in an idol house built on the sea bank, that monster would
spend the night in this idol house and in the morning that girl would be found
dead and people would burn her body.
The maiden for
the monster used to be chosen by the lucky draw, this time the name of an old
widow’s daughter came out in the lucky draw and the widow was left crying too. When
the traveler went to the window’s house, on his inquiry he was told everything
about how much the atrocities of the monster had increased.
The traveler
comforted the widow and expressed a strange wish that I should be seated in the
idol house tonight instead of your daughter. They agreed, the traveler
performed ablution and entered the idol house, and started reciting the Holy
Quran.
The monster
came and went away and promised never to return. People gathered outside the idol
house in the morning to cremate the body, but seeing the traveler alive, they became
astonished and came back to their homes.
Who was that traveler?
That traveler
was the famous Muslim preacher and traveler Sheikh Abu Barakat Barbari. The
news of Abu Barakat's arrival and his defeat to the monster spread like
wildfire. The king invited the Sheikh to his court with royal honor. Sheikh invited
the king to accept Islam. The king accepted Islam and within just 2 months all
the people of Maldives had converted from Buddhism and became Muslims.
It was in 1314
AD that this preacher made the Maldives his abode, taught people the Qur'an and
Hadith, built thousands of mosques, and died in the Maldives and was buried on
the same soil.
It can be said
that Abul Barakat Barbari did the work of the whole Ummah alone, even today he
must be getting an equal reward.
