Apple Inc. unveiled new iPhone 14 models that can send satellite calls for help in an emergency, as well as collision detection features and an adventure-focused Ultra Watch.
iPhone 14
models test Apple's ability to steal dollars from its
relatively wealthy customer base, which continues to spend amid rising
inflation but is not immune to a slowing economy. iPhone 14 starts at $799, and
iPhone Plus at $899. Both can be pre-ordered from September 9th. It
also says that in some situations users can use the Find
My app to share their location via satellite when there is no
other connection.
Globalstar said
in its filing that it would become a satellite operator for
Apple's Emergency SOS service. Globalstar's shares fell
about 16% on Wednesday before halting ahead of the announcement
of a deal with Apple. The stock is up about 50% year-to-date.
Other companies
are working on similar features. SpaceX founder Elon Musk said last
month that he would work with T-Mobile to connect phones directly to
the Internet using Starlink satellites.
Apple's iPhone 14 Plus model has a bigger screen than
Apple's iPhone Pro model, but like the previous iPhone 13, it
has its A16 processor chip. New watch ultra-models for extreme sports and
diving.
Apple warns of bugs hackers can use to break into his
iPhones and Macs.
The Ultra has a bigger battery to withstand events like triathlons, better water and
temperature resistance for outdoor use, and better GPS
tracking for sports.
New watches include
an upgraded budget model called SE and a Series 8 watch with power
modes for crash detection and 36 hours of battery life. The Series
8 starts at $499 with cellular and the SE starts at $299
with cellular. Starting at $799, the Ultra with cellular on the base model will
be available on September 23rd.
Apple says the
new Series 8 watch will have a temperature sensor that will retroactively
detect ovulation in conjunction with the previously released
cycle tracking app. The company emphasized Cycle Tracking's approach to
privacy. Apple said it doesn't have the key to decrypt health
data like cycle tracking.
But while
accessories like the Apple Watch have spurred increased sales from
Apple's existing user base, the iPhone remains the cornerstone of the
company's business, accounting for 52.4% of its sales last year. Apple's
stock rose 0.6% more than an hour into the presentation after
the S&P 500 rose 1.5% during the session, coinciding with the event's
start.
The device is
expected to have a camera that relays the wearer', overlaying
digital objects with the physical world. Analysts expect the device
to launch as early as next year.
